What is deep tissue massage?

According to the August 2005 issue of Consumer Reports magazine, 34,000 people ranked deep tissue massage more effective in relieving osteoarthritis pain than physical therapy, exercise, prescription medications, chiropractic, acupuncture, diet, glucosamine and over-the-counter drugs. Deep tissue massage also received a top ranking for fibromyalgia pain. People often notice improved range of motion immediately after their session.

Deep tissue massage is a specialized type of massage therapy that focuses on releasing tightness and restriction in the deeper muscular layers of your body.  It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as the neck, low back, and shoulders.  It is similar to relaxing massage therapy,  but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper.  Deep tissue work also concentrates on areas of tension and pain,  helping to work out the deeper “knots” and trigger points in your muscles and fascia.

When you have chronic muscle tension in a part of your body, often the area develops what are called “adhesions” where a muscle, tendon, or ligament becomes rigid, stiff, and bound to the layers around it.   These adhesions can block fluid circulation, restrict your motion, restrict circulation and create inflammation.

Deep tissue massage helps to physically break up these adhesions with pressure and movement, restore normal movement and often reduce the pain.

Will it hurt?

At some point during a session most people will find that some areas are painful during treatment.   The stiffness or pain associated with treatment should subside within 24-48 hours.
